WILLIAM SANDY

This painting, titled ‘Two Women’ was painted by William Sandy. William was born near Ernabella in South Australia. Since 1973, he has lived with his family in Papunya, where he commenced painting in 1975. In the early 80’s, he began painting for the Papunya Tula Artists. Some of his subjects include dingo, emu, women and green bean. William is also a very knowledgeable traditional medicine man. He is married to Violet Nakamarra, the sister of Michael Nelson Jakamarra.

His selected exhibitions include:

1983 Mori Gallery, Sydney;

1985 Aboriginal Artists Gallery, Melbourne;

1988-1989 “Dreaming” Exhibition this toured the U.S.A.;

1990 Isaacs Gallery, Toronto, Canada;

1992 IBM – Kawasaki City Gallery, Kawasaki, Japan;

2000 Aboriginal Art Galleries of Australia, Melbourne; just to name a few.

His selected collections include:

Robert Holmes a Court;

Broken Hill Gallery, Broken Hill;

Araluen Arts Centre, Alice Springs;

Donald Khan Collection, U.S.A.;

Groninger Museum, Groninger, The Netherlands.

He also won the Northern Territory Art Award in 1985.
