Autoresponders, Auto Reply – good or bad?
Spamcop (who should know) say bad because “These “auto-responders” respond indiscriminately to forged and legitimate email. Spam and virus messages are almost invariably forged so as to appear to be “from” an unrelated third party. When an auto-responder receives one of these forged messages, they in turn send misdirected mail. Because of this, they become spam sources themselves and are the subject of blockades.”

Email addresses

Get a Permanent Email Address

Your ISP will offer you a free email address – msbloggs@bigpond.com, myname33@obscureisp.ru etc.

The problem with these freebies is that sooner or later you will change your provider, and when you do you’ll need to change your email address too. Best to use something more permanent – if you have your own domain, then use that – me@myowndomain.com – or get a ymail or gmail address.

Always a good idea to have a backup email address, so better still, do both.

In answer to a client:

“What it means is that if you should leave Telstra (sooner or later, everyone changes ISP) you will lose your current email address @bigpond.com.au. If you start using a gmail address *now*, it will be ready when the time comes, and in the meantime you can gradually change all your stationery etc.”

Another reply:

One method I use to help combat the problem is to use an email address with a year attached for my replies or signups, for instance something2012@mydomain.com so that when I see that the spammers are starting to use that one for more than 5 or 10 per day, I ditch it in favour of something2013 or something2015. I try to keep my main address for only known and trusted replies and signups so that I don’t have to update 50 forms for banks, forums, web services and the like when I have to junk an address.

I’ve a client I must have told this to a dozen times over the past decade, but he simply would not listen. “I’m not going go change my ISP”, he said, repeatedly. Then he changed his ISP. Big panic. Hundreds of clients from all over the world could not contact him.

ISPs – Internet Service Providers
In answer to a client:
“As far as your internet goes, you’ll need a service provider. They all require contracts, but you may find someone who will bundle your landline and your internet – much as Telstra was no doubt doing – but at a much lower price.”

I recommend you try this page:

Pinnacle Soundbridge I no longer use this system, but hopefully these notes will be of use to someone who does… Want music from your computer that you can run through your sound system. Store your music digitally, send it by WiFi to your sound system, and control it either via remote control at the sound …

Sharing & Posting on Facebook – Make the Posts your Own

Sharing & Posting on Facebook – Make the Posts your Own Important: Make the posts your own. Copy the image from the Facebook original post, along with the key text, and a link to the original post, page or article – you get the long-term credit, whilst still crediting the original. There is little long-term advantage …

Facebook Advertising Campaigns

Facebook Advertising Campaigns

Facebook Advertising Campaigns I’ve run several Facebook campaigns. In my opinion they’re great for getting a page off the ground but a little pointless for a well established page. One I ran a year or so back reaped a 1000 likes, but none of them seem to engage in the posts I make, or very very …
