The
Cambridge Illustrated History of Prehistoric Art (Cambridge Illustrated
History)
by Paul G. Bahn, Desmond Morris
Beautifully illustrated in color with many rare and unique photographs,
prints, and drawings, The Cambridge Illustrated History of Prehistoric
Art presents the first balanced and truly worldwide survey of prehistoric
art. The book also offers the first detailed account of how the world of
scholarship became aware of the existence of prehistoric art, reproducing
the very earliest drawings by explorers and surveyors from the 1600s onward
to create a unique pictorial as well as discursive resource. With this
powerful combination of illustration and analysis, Paul Bahn describes
what prehistoric art is and the different ways in which it can shed light
on the lives and preoccupations of our ancestors: sexual, humorous, social,
economic, and religious. The result is a fascinating exploration: a book
that Desmond Morris describes as "a model of scientific restraint and objectivity....this
is ultimately an art book, and as such it is endlessly provocative and
engaging." Paul Bahn is an archaeologist and the author of more than 400
publications. He has authored or coauthored eight books, including The
Cambridge Illustrated History of Archaeology. Dr. Bahn is a fellow of the
Society of Antiquaries.

Dawn
of Art : The Chauvet Cave: The Oldest Known Paintings in the World
by Jean-Marie Chauvet, et al
The 1990s have witnessed a sort of renaissance in cave art, thanks
to new discoveries from the south of France. Previously, the oldest examples
of human art were thought to have been painted 15,000 years ago. When these
three spelunkers-turned-authors happened upon the Chauvet cave (named after
one of them), however, they visited an underground art gallery that had
been closed for 30,000 years. It's still inaccessible today, except to
specialists. But this wonderful book of pictures and text allows virtual
tourists to appreciate the creations of our remotest ancestors. This may
be primitive art in the literal sense of the term, but it's remarkably
sophisticated. Amazon.com

Cave
of Altamira
by Antonio Beltran (Editor), et al
This splendid volume offers a fresh look at one of the finest surviving
works of Paleolithic art: the paintings in the cave of Altamira in northern
Spain.
Discovered in 1879, these vivid likenesses of horses, cattle, and bison
seemed so fresh and "modern" that critics doubted their authenticity, and
suspected an elaborate hoax. Only in 1905, with the first scholarly analysis
of the works, were they finally accepted as Paleolithic art. Charts, maps,
and descriptions guide readers through the... The Publisher

Prehistoric
Art in Europe (Pelican History of
Art)
by N. K. Sandars, N.K. Sanders
Until around 10,000 BC art in Europe appears to have been in advance
of the rest of the world and throws light on the total history of early
man. The great masterpieces of cave-painting at Lascaux are well known,
and one tradition of early sculpture is from the first surprizingly classical.
With the shelter paintings of the Spanish Levant and the clay modelling
and painted pottery of eastern Europe in the fourth and third millennia
BC fresh artistic problems were tackled. Later still evolved the high technical
accomplishment of the metal-workers, and this study concludes with an account
of the new departures of Celtic La Tene art of the last four centuries
BC.
