Art for All: British Posters for Transport (Yale Center for British Art)
Art for All: British Posters for Transport (Yale Center for British Art)
by Teri Edelstein, Neil Harris, Michael Twyman, Oliver Green, Peyton Skipwith
In 1908 London Underground began a comprehensive publicity program that became one of the most successful, adventurous, and best-sustained promotional operations ever attempted.  The posters commissioned not only encouraged travel on the capital’s burgeoning public transport system; they also helped to foster a civic identity for metropolitan London. The four national rail lines created in 1923, inspired by this example, created their own campaigns. This richly illustrated volume celebrates the designs, highlighting works that are among the triumphs of 20th-century poster art.

Designed to accompany an exhibition at the Yale Center for British Art, Art for All features more than one hundred works executed for the Underground and the railways. The exhibition and catalogue will explore the evolution of transport posters in 20th-century Britain. It will feature the career of E. McKnight Kauffer, perhaps the greatest of these poster artists; the role of women designers; the printing techniques that brought the designs to life; and the strategies of display developed by the transport systems. Both a visual delight and a work of scholarship, Art for All pays tribute to these extraordinary exploits in public design.

Swag: Rock Posters of the '90s
Swag: Rock Posters of the '90s
by Spencer Drate, Art Chantry
Book Description:
An outrageous mix of indie cool, punk-retro aesthetics, camp, and kitsch, the concert posters of the 1990s became so wildly popular that they took on a life of their own, sometimes outshining the rock bands they were created to promote. Not only are they avidly collected today, but an annual two-day convention known as Flatstock now exists to celebrate the works of the leading artists and designers. Exploding with color and bold graphics, this awesome collection of the best rock posters of the decade is the only book in print that examines and illustrates this important movement in graphic design.

Teeming with more than 250 posters by over 50 designers, Swag is a groundbreaking introduction to the world of concert poster art, and a look at the cutting-edge music it was created for, from Nirvana and Pearl Jam to Sonic Youth and the Velvet Underground. The visionaries of the genre are all here, including Frank Kozik, Coop, Jermaine Rogers, Stefan Sagmeister, and Brian Ewing. An insightful foreword by Art Chantry, Seattle's iconoclastic genius of rock poster design, accompanies this collection of visually arresting images compiled by noted author and designer Spencer Drate. Together, they honor the free-thinking politics, angst, and imagination of rock culture of the past decade through the present day.

Poster Collection 04: Hors-Sol - Poster Actions in Switzerland
by Bettina Richter (Editor), Harald Szeemann (Afterword)
Book Description: "Hors-Sol" is a record of poster actions conducted by fine artists in public places in Switzerland, starting with the sensational campaign mounted by the Zurich Concrete Artists in 1961. Though the poster is usually a medium for commercial messages, here it is used to convey new meanings, some firmly anchored in the context of art, others explicitly aimed at advertising. Disturbing intrusions into everyday life, these visual actions cause people to reflect on the condition in which art and PR function. In historical comparison, they function as a mirror of the time and reveal a great deal about changing social conditions. The poster campaigns that took place in the 1960s and 80s were impressively explosive and alarmingly direct, whereas today's artistic forays into the poster as medium are evidence that PR aesthetics and the art world are becoming more and more indistinguishable.
